Ocean Theme Birthday Cake and a Marvelous Mess Party

For my Munchkins birthday party, we had an Ocean theme. Ove the next week or so I'll be sharing the different parts of the party that I crafted and organized to make this theme work....and it really did, it was so much fun!! The cake was really fun to make. I'm no fancy cake decorator, but I can admit I've stepped up my game since the days of the flat sheet cake. Now with this cake we're talking layers and we're talking homemade chocolate candies, we're talking edible glitter gel, and even a little spoon flick to make the top of the frosting resemble waves.

To make the candies, I just bought a shell mold at AC Moore, melted some white chocolate, poured it in the containers and popped it out when it was ready. Really easy, and I thought it gave it a nice look.

For the waves on the top frosting: Frost the top and then, with a small spoon, press the flat part near the tip into the frosting and pull up on the end of the handle in a vertical direction.

Here is the recipe:

Here is the recipe:
1 box devil’s food cake mix
1 small pkg Jello instant chocolate pudding mix
1 cup sour cream
4 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups mini chocolate chips

~Set the stove for 350 and mix all ingredients except for chocolate chips in a *large* bowl. Once it is thoroughly mixed, add the chocolate chips and place it in two greased 9 inch cake pans.
It should bake for around 45 minutes, but check it at 30 and every 5 minutes or so after, remembering that the melted chips can trick you.

You're going to love this cake!!!

Last week we had some fun projects linked up (as usual). Here's my favorite!!! I'll be featuring this project on my sidebar for a week:
Fine-Feathered Friend from Turtles and Tails. Love the feathers in this.....it's totally a fall look.

Watercolor Tape Resist Craft

I spent the whole summer hosting kids crafts 3 times a week at the library that I work at, and I haven't posted anything about it. I've been totally out of the craft blogger zone!! I'm going to try to jump back into it again, with at least a craft a week....and I figured I'd announce it on here so I'd have something to hold myself to publicly. :-)

Here is a really simple exercise to try with kids.

Tape Resist!!

I bought a whole bunch of simple blank notecards and let the kids use masking tape to make designs on them. Then we painted around them with watercolor paints, let them dry, and removed the tape!!
The same effect can be made with rubber cement.

I shared this post at the following parties:

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice

Fall time is officially two weeks away – is anyone as excited as I am?! With fall time comes amazing things, like my birthday, decorating for the holidays, and hot cocoa and hot apple cider. Not to mention it’s time to fill your home with festive decorations and get crafty! Let’s go through some of the many things to look forward to, so that you’ll become just as excited as I am if you aren’t already excited about everything fantastic that the fall time brings. ;)

Fall time Decorating – Decorating your home with fall time elements is fun, especially when it involved pumpkins, acorns, fall foliage, and other fall inspired décor pieces. If you currently have wall fountains in your home and other modern pieces, don’t be afraid to incorporate fall time decorations. If anything this type of décor will add to your stylish home, not take away from it!

Photoshoot in a Leaf Pile – Every autumn I love to bring my smart phone or camera outside with me after the leaves have fallen from their branches. It’s so much fun taking shots of the piles of leaves and then having someone take a photoshoot of me and my family! There are also many creative ways to capture your memories during the fall time, and taking pictures when the leaves have fallen is a must-do activity.

Baked Pies and Other Yummy Foods – Mmm isn’t making food during the fall time a lot of fun? There are so many delicious snacks and desserts to make, from pumpkin pie to pumpkin chocolate chip cookies! Let’s not forget that Thanksgiving and Christmas fall after autumn time as well, and with these holidays comes even more delicious food such as mashed potatoes, turkey, green beans, and more food that’s far too good to pass up.

Fall Time Activities – Depending on where you live, its fun going to bonfires by the ocean, finding a corn maze to explore, and visiting a pumpkin patch before Halloween hits, that isn’t far from your home. All of these activities are family friendly and most are fairly inexpensive as well! Even though I’m in my late twenties I love participating in fall time activities. They are a great way to soak up the autumn time before it ends and winter sinks in! Oh wow, now I’m really getting ahead of myself. Its best you enjoy the fall time, pumpkin spice, and everything nice that comes with it.

Quality Health Care: What you and your Family Should Look For

Sometimes finding quality health care can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Every health care service is different and often times it is impossible to know if the doctor, office, and hospital will provide the most excellent health care that is available. So how can you be sure to find quality health care for yourself and your family? There are a few ways to measure health care that will lead to excellent care when it is needed the most.

Consumer Ratings

The first thing to consider when searching for quality health care is by reading consumer ratings. You will want to look for positive answers to your questions, such as finding out if the doctors communicated well and if the members received the health services they wanted. Not all of the ratings will be accurate, however, so be careful with your research and use your best judgment.

Clinical Performance Measures

Some use what is called HEDIS, which is a clinical performance measure. If you’re wondering how the measures work, they essentially look at a health care organization and evaluate how they treat and prevent illness in patients of all ages. One example is analyzing whether children get their shots when they need them. If they do, this is a good sign that the health care is superior quality.

Consult Friends and Family Members

Perhaps family members who live in your same city have an idea where to find excellent health care. It never hurts to ask them who they recommend and what their experience has been at the health care location they go to. Friends will also have experience with this matter as well. Ask around, do your research and you will feel better about your decision when you finally find the right physician, family practice and hospital to go to.
Depending on where you are located, find a family practice that will satisfy your health care needs by using consumer ratings and clinical performance measures as your guidelines. Once you find a family practice that you feel is a great fit, you no longer will have to be concerned!
For example, there is a Cary family practice or a Raleigh family practice that will fulfill your health needs by offering quality care. Isn’t it refreshing finding a family practice that will make you and your family feel like you are in good hands? So do your research and find quality health care for you and your family today.

What a Brave Costume....

I had a chance to review another fun costume from the Costume Supercenter. I chose to review Merida from the new Disney movie Brave.  The reason I chose Brave is because I feel that for the first time in a long while, Disney made a female character who can take care of herself and stands up for herself. In a world filled with Princess adoration in young children, I think it's very important to encourage the idea of women and strong and self-sufficient rather than weak and dependent on men.

The costume is fun and simple, with a fun celtic style, slightly puffed sleeves, a wide belt, and a velcro back. The material is satiny and has lovely hues. I have found that when buying costumes, in general, you should always add a size up. This is a great costume for dress-up or for Halloween, though if you live in the Northeast like me, you'll need to be wearing layers to go trick-or-treating.

Something else to consider when buying this costume is accessories!! What about Merida's bow??

Some Ways To Simplify Your Daily Beauty Regimen

Image from http://myfavoritecolourisshiny.tumblr.com/post/26102993559

Ways to Simplify Your Daily Beauty Regimen

Want more time to craft the night away before and after work, or after a long day of taking care of the kids? Simplify your beauty routine! It’s easy to get caught up the full blown beauty treatment, from several layers of makeup to taking way too much time reapplying your hot eye makeup look at work. However, wouldn’t it be nice just to go all natural for the day or at least spend less time on your beauty regimen when it needs refreshing? Here’s how:

Apply Primer to Your Lids – If you enjoy wearing a hint of eyes shadow on your lids it’s definitely fun to do so, but instead of worrying about touching it up or reapplying your shadow mid-day at work, why not set it in place all day with primer? Apply your eyelid primer prior to applying your eye shadow and your eye shadow will stay on your eye lids all day long.

Slim Down your Face – Did you know that bronzer helps slim down your face? Not only is it a natural sun-kissed look, but it is a lot easier to apply bronzer once as opposed to finding the right blush to go with your outfit. Bronzer goes with essentially any ensemble and will look fabulous on your skin all day. It’s time to go outside and glow!

A Simple Yet Sultry Hair Style – If you don’t have time to straighten or curl your locks early in the morning before you head to work; why not try a simple top knot? It’s definitely an on-trend look that’s easy to pull off and it will look ultra chic in your hair. Don’t put much time into your hair and hair extensions (if you have them), and you may be surprised with how fabulous the hairstyle will turn out!

Make Lips Plumper – Who needs lips that are surgically enhanced when you have lip gloss? Lip gloss is a natural and easy way to make your lips look pouty and pretty. This visual 3-D effect will look lovely on your lips all day long, so keep on applying your favorite shade of gloss and have fun with your easy yet stunning makeup appearance.

Perfect Locks is a web site that offers a variety of Indian human hair extensions and more! Learn more about Perfect Locks by stopping by their About Me section on the site and don’t forget to check out their Facebook and Twitter page as well. Why Supplements are Important

Why Supplements are Important for Your Child to Take

As the fall time settles in and you’re getting ready to take the kids back to school, it’s also important to concentrate more on their health as a new season begins. If you’ve felt hesitant about having your child take supplements, it’s okay for them to take them once a day. Vitamins are very important for children as they grow older because it promotes excellent health. If you’re still apprehensive about giving your child supplements, learn about how they are beneficial to their health and body development.

What are Supplements?

The word supplement may come across confusing, so to clear up any confusion, the definition of supplements covers a few different factors. First, supplements essentially contain the food that you eat. They also contain one or more dietary ingredients which include vitamins, herbs, botanicals, amino acids, minerals, and other substances. Since you most likely don’t get all of the vitamins that your body needs on a daily basis, supplements are an important part of a child’s development and you should be having them take one multi-vitamin daily.

How Vitamins Help Improve a Child’s Health and Your Health too!

There are several vitamins that help improve a child’s health, such as vitamin A, which supports vision and bone growth. Vitamin E helps improve the immune system and in addition helps repair your DNA. Overall supplements will create an extra barrier or protection against mineral deficiency, which unfortunately impairs the body and leads to illnesses and other possible health problems down the road.

In addition to the vitamins just mentioned, as a parent you may want to consider implementing silica supplements into your child’s health later in life and taking them yourself now. Silica is a great supplement to take for adults because it helps the body absorb many minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus deposit in the bones. With silica your body will properly absorb minerals and you will be around a lot longer to watch your children grow up!

Keep in mind that it is still very important to have a healthy diet every day and that supplements will not make up for a lack of vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fruits. However, multivitamins and mineral supplements are great safeguards against a lack of vitamin shortfalls and will help improve your diet on a daily basis.

How To Make Cake Pops: Guest Post

How to Make Cake Pops
Cake pops are a delightful way to celebrate a special occasion by blending the delicious flavor of cake with the easy accessibility of lollipops. Currently, cake pops are a popular option for providing refreshments at occasions for people of all ages. A large reason for their popularity is how easily the flavors, colors and toppings of cake pops can be altered to appeal to a person’s specific tastes or to the theme of a party.
Additionally, the process of making cake pops is fun for everyone. The following information will help anyone who is interested in making cake pops get started on making these tasty treats:
Where to Buy Ingredients and Materials
The cake portion of a cake pop simply requires the same ingredients as a person would need to use when making a cake. This is also true of the icing. Boxed cake and icing mixes can be purchased at a grocery store, or the cake and icing can be made from scratch using basic ingredients from the kitchen.
Cake pops also will need a chocolate or candy coating. Melting chocolate and dipping chips can be found at craft stores or large family retail chains. In order to present the tops, many people prefer to wrap them in ribbons and fabric from a place such as HartsFabric.com where fabrics can be found in a variety of patterns and colors to fit the theme of a party.
Basic Cake Pop Instructions
The first step to making cake pops is to bake a cake and let it cool. Then, the cake should be crumbled and mixed with enough icing to make the cake stick together. Once the cake and icing are mixed, then it will need to be formed into balls that are approximately one inch in diameter. Lollipops should then be placed into the balls.
The balls should then be cooled in the refrigerator for long enough to get them chilled. Once the balls are cold, then they should be dipped into melted candy coating, and then stood up in foam to allow drying. It is important to avoid lying the cake pops down as it can cause the candy coating to come off of the pop.
Adding Special Touches
Once the cake pops have been made, finishing touches can be added to make the cake pops even more festive. Chocolate in a contrasting color can be drizzled over the balls, or the cake balls can be rolled in sprinkles before drying. Additionally, different cake and icing mixes can be experimented with to create exotic flavors. For example, a cherry cake mixed with chocolate icing can have a very different flavor from a traditional vanilla cake mix.
When making cake pops for a special event, it is important to experiment with different flavors, sprinkles and fabrics to create a unique effect. Serving cake pops at any type of function is certain to generate excitement while highlighting a person’s culinary creativity.

Falling into Amazing Fall Activities with Your Kids

Since fall time is on its way it’s time to start thinking about all of the fun fall time activities you can do with your kids! Some may be obvious, such as buying pumpkins and decorating them or teaching them how to rake the leaves. However, there are still many other fall time activities to explore too, such as revamping an interior or simply encouraging your kids to keep their room organized more. With the fall times comes endless possibilities, so start dreaming up some fun activities and have a blast with your children when it gets a bit colder outside!

Falling for Fall Time Crafts

It’s easy to fall in love with crafts during the fall time because it gives you a nice excuse to pull on your favorite sweater and drink some hot cider. Set up the perfect work station for you and your kids and have them color pictures out of a coloring book of pumpkins, decorate small pumpkins with embellishments, or create pretty leaves with sparkles. Whatever you have your kids create during the fall time, the point is to assist them in having fun with amazing crafts. Plus, you’ll love watching them create and they’ll love the finished project.

Revamp a Room and Add Special Elements

Since interior design trends come and go, sometimes fall time is a good time to revamp a space and add something extra to it. If your room is currently a tropical haven but it seems to be missing a main element, why not incorporate an aquarium? Stock up on aquarium supplies and set up an aquarium during the fall time. Not only will it remind you of the warmer days to come (even though it may seem far away right now), but it will also teach your kids the responsibility of taking care of fish. In addition, you might want to teach them how to clean out an aquarium indoors when they can’t go outdoors as often because it will be a lot colder.

Trick or Treat and Thanksgiving Memories

Of course two of the most anticipated activities during the fall time happen to be Halloween and Thanksgiving. Both holidays offer up the opportunity for you to be creative as opposed to spending a lot of money. This means perhaps making costumes for your kids as opposed to buying expensive ones at Target and for Thanksgiving, instead of buying a ton of decorations, why not make some yourself? Be creative this fall time and cut back on the spending. You’ll have a beautiful home filled with fun fall time projects and your kids will also have an amazing time creating and adding to a lovely home during the magical fall time months.

Sierra is a freelance writer and lover of fall time and fall time crafts. Not only does her birthday fall during the fall time, it just so happens to be her favorite season of the year too. Connect with Sierra on Twitter and find out what fall time activities she’s been up to.

Putting the Functional in Tablecloths

Putting the Functional in Tablecloths

Having small children is both a joy and a lot of work, so that’s why it’s ideal to have functional home elements that easy to use. Tablecloths look lovely in a home, but they also are very useful. If your children love to play games or color, having a washable tablecloth will help prevent staining on your expensive furniture. Don’t fret about the possible mishaps that might happen when you’re not around to supervise your kids 24/7. Decorate to your heart’s content and enjoy functional elements that will add to a space. It’s time to get functional with tablecloths.

Kids Love to Play – Let Them Have Fun!

Do you find yourself getting uptight about not allowing kids to sit on an expensive sofa or spend time at a nice table?  If you find yourself getting stressed out when you don’t need to, why not implement a tablecloth? It will be a lot easier for them to sit down and play their games or play with play dough there without you worrying about the possible messes that will most likely take place. A machine washable tablecloth is very convenient to use and is also made for daily use. Allow your kids to use their imaginations and have fun. If an accident happens, it won’t be the end of the world because you’ll have a washable tablecloth to back you up.

Tablecloths Also Add Sparkle to an Interior

Besides using practical tablecloths on a kitchen table so that your kids can create without constant supervision, tablecloths made out of pretty patterns and a nice cotton blend will look stunning in an interior. Glam up your dining room area and find colors and patterns that will make a room come alive. Elegance starts with a tablecloth and ends with all of the other elements that you can add to a dining room as well, such as a pretty painting, flowers in a vase, and stylish dinnerware.

Tablecloths Work Perfectly for Holiday Events

Having a variety of tablecloths to use for upcoming holidays is another way to get functional. Find French tablecloths and other sparkly table elements and have fun coming up with a table setting that you and your guests will love. In regards to a tablecloth, find a tablecloth that suits your needs. Choosing from a variety of colors and patterns will be easy to do and pretty soon you’ll have a lovely ambiance in your dining room and other interiors that will look nice for any holiday or special occasion.

Nestle into a Craft Room with Crafty Necessities

If you are anything like me and Missy, we like to craft the day away within a cozy area that's full of crafty necessities. I'm always looking for ways to improve my crafty space and there just so happens to be many accessories that aide me in creating a functional space. If your goal is to create a craft haven where everything is accessible and feel at home simultaneously, keep reading....

Supplies Within Reach

Having your craft supplies within reach is important when you’re trying to get craft projects done. Using wall shelves above your desk that is at your height (or within arms length) will make it easy to pull supplies down when you need to get to them. Also, having colorful bins and baskets on top of the shelves will also keep things organized and you can also mark the outside of the basket so you’ll know what exactly is in there. Another idea is to securely place a rod on your wall followed by putting hooks and cups on the rod too. You can place scissors, markets, tape, and even paintbrushes either on the hooks or within the cups for clever and stylish storage.

Trendy and Functional Furniture

If you have the right amount of furniture in a fun craft room space then the entire room will look fantastic. The idea is to utilize the space but not make it look too cluttered. As well as having a desk chair, durable desk, and a table to work on, why not implement a sofa bed for guests to sit on too? Sofa beds are very functional because if you are limited on space in your home, a sofa bed will work perfectly for guests who are spending the night because they have will have a pull out bed to sleep on. Transform your craft room space into an instant guest bedroom and they will feel right at home in your tidy and functional interior.

Organize Supplies by Purpose

Part of having a functional and fabulous craft room is organizing your supplies by purpose. This means that you either need to organize them by type (i.e. markers or glue), color, brand, or seasonality. It really depends on what works for you best and where you’ll be able to find your supplies the easiest. If you’re able to use clear containers to store your craft supplies in, that might also be helpful. Organization can be tricky, but once you figure out a way to store supplies and find them easily, you’re all set to go.

So are you ready to design or revamp your craft room? Organization and nestling into a craft room may seem challenging, but once you have all of your craft necessities your craft room will become your new favorite retreat. It’s a great place to get away from it all, believe me! I love escaping and enjoying my craft room. From relaxing to allowing my imagination to come alive, a trendy craft room is definitely worth it!

Sierra is a freelance writer and owner of Paige One. She loves to craft and having a functional interior with craft necessities is something she loves, especially when she needs to get away from it all.
