European Vacation: Rome, Italy II

Spanish Steps

Every day of our trip through Italy, Switzerland, and France was organized by ourselves. Every day except one: we took a day long tour in Rome, with a local named Pietro, who drove us around in his air conditioned van and chatted the minutes and hours away with stories of government corruption and of fights between famous sculptors. We zipped from major site to major site, taking a minimal amount of time to soak it in before moving on, which suited us just fine; there was a heat wave throughout Europe this past July and that is not something you want to linger in!!

We saw the Spanish Steps, which then led down to a lovely little square in a very chintzy part of town. In the middle of this area was a fountain made by Bernini's father. It still works perfectly well and looks incredible. In the photo above, you can see how unimpressed the Roman's were with it; that man is standing on it in work boots covered with cement dust, using it to fill up a bucket to, presumably, make some more cement nearby!!

This is Pietro, our guide, showing us how to use "The Big Nose" fountains that you can find throughout the city. Put your finger in the end of the fountain, and voila!!

One thing that you'll notice about a lot of my photo's is that they don't really offer very many wide views. It feels like I'm always zooming in. That's because I am. You see, I had planned on using my cell phone for bigger scenery photo's in lieu of bring a smaller lens and adding more weight to our luggage; instead, I just brought my larger telephoto lens. The first day of our European vacation I had my cell phone stolen,  along with a box of pizza. Honestly, I thought it was hilarious. I had left it in an obvious place and forgotten about it. Some lucky Roman got quite a treat that night!!

The Oculus of the Pantheon
The Pantheon was one of those buildings that was amazing to see and disappointing at the same time. The Pantheon's dome in still, 2000 years after being built, the largest unsupported concrete dome anywhere in the world. The building itself is a marvel. It has been used almost continuously since it was created, and unfortunately, those that used it left their mark upon it. What was once a pagan site dedicated to all gods, was transformed into a Christian church.

 Piazza Navona
Pietro was smart enough to bring us to Piazza Navona, my favorite square in Rome and the one I had heard the most reviews about. We visited during the day and knew that we would have to be back at night. Nighttime is when Romans take their evening stroll and cool down from the heat of the day.
Of course, we also visited the Colosseum. With a little trickery and some tipping, Pietro took us in the quick way to see this famous site. Without him, we would have been standing in line for hours!! It was amazing to imagine it when it looked the way it had 2000 years ago. This place actually had a retractable wooden roof!! Though the activities that took place within the walls of the Colosseum were terrible; it was humbling to be in the presence of such mastery of masonry and architecture.

More Italian adventures soon!!

European Vacation: Rome, Italy

Spending a month in Europe is one of those experiences that you can't really summarize with one sentence, or a paragraph, or even a small essay. I took so many photo's while we traveled, it was embarrassing. And, thrilling, because this trip really helped to cement my passion for photography.  I thought I would share some of them with you. I focused a lot on the people and the eccentricities of the different cultures we encountered, because I knew those were the details I would really want to remember. Anyone who visits Rome can get a photo of the Colosseum. I wanted to find the faces that I wouldn't want to forget.

Like this gypsy woman blowing bubbles with her hands in Villa Borghese.

 Or, the many lovers:

Musicians practicing in the villa, perhaps for their gig at one of the many piazza's later that night.

Another musician, this time an elderly one, with years of schooling in classical guitar:

Nuns eating gelato.
I couldn't resist.

These two felt like a much more real representation of the youth of Rome.

And, another gypsy in a piazza, arranging his roses to sell to the first tourist he finds.

More soon of Roma!!

Getting Cancer from Asbestos?!

Did you know that the asbestos in old buildings, factories, and schools can flake off, become airborne and cause a fatal type of cancer called Mesothelioma?!!

That's why I'm taking a Moment for Mesothelioma. Please read this information.....

Every year close to 3,000 people are diagnosed with Mesothelioma.

You can still find Asbestos in SCHOOLS, old buildings, and factories!!

No amount of exposure to Asbestos is safe!

Symptoms of Mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 60 years after exposure and those symptoms are hard to diagnose, as they mimic other respiratory illnesses.

You can have contact with Asbestos second-hand, through clothing or items that have the Asbestos fibers on them.

Asbestos is still NOT banned in the United States!!

For more information on MESOTHELIOMA go to:

You can also find, at the same website, information on how to be safe around asbestos and who to contact for help with removing Asbestos:

I hope this information has been helpful and I hope all of you are being safe and staying away from Asbestos!

Wet Felted Easter Egg Tutorial

Here is a really simple Easter Egg craft for you OR your children! These eggs look fantastic and are a fun take on the traditionally smooth and shiny Easter Egg.

Here is what you need:
Stryofoam Eggs
Wool Roving (many colors)
Hot Soapy Water
Cold Water
Needle Felting Supplies (optional)

~Take your egg and wrap a long piece of roving around it, try to cover it from different directions. You can add multiple pieces of roving if you'd like at this point. I used some needle felting to tack them into place to make the wet work easier, but you don't have to do that if you don't want to.
~Place the roving covered egg in the hot soapy water and roll it around in your hands, making sure you get a lot of soap and water on it every now and then. The wool fibers will slowly begin to shrink around the egg. Once the roving is feeling a little more firmly in place, you can be more wild with the agitation of the wool... in the beginning you'll have to go pretty easy.

Making a Giant Bean Bag

Disclosure: I receive payment for referrals for Social Spark, and you can too if you sign up! See below!

I went shopping the other day and at the mall there was a new store selling Giant Bean Bags. But, at about $420....these were completely out of my range. I knew I could make them myself, and do it much more cheaply! So. I did.

If you would like to make a giant bean bag here are the supplies you'll need:
Zipper (20+ inches)
Two Tapestries (or queen size flat sheets)
EPS Beans (Bean bag Beans)
Pallet
Dryer Sheet
*You can find suppliers of EPS beads on line....I was in a rush to finish this project and bought them online at Bed Bath and Beyond. I bought 6 bags at $14.99 each)*
On the whole this project cost me about $100.....not bad when I could have spent close to 5 times that!

A Marvelous Mess

Welcome to my Marvelous Mess!
I went to a huge yard sale this weekend..... and guess what I found for $8?

 A vintage floor model globe!
It's got the USSR on it, which dates it anywhere from 1922 and 1991..... I'm betting on somewhere in the 80's though from the look of it. I'll look for more countries that don't exist anymore and that should help me get a better date. Do any of you know a secret to finding the date of a globe?

As I walked around with my globe throughout the rest of the yard sale, I got so many compliments! I knew it had been a good buy.

The dogs have been pretty curious about this new addition...

Toxic Chemicals in our Environment

I have been compensated for this post. All the opinions in it are my own..... and, truthfully, I would have written something about this topic anyway. If you follow my twitter feed, you'll see constant posts about petitions to help people, animals, and the environment. Petitions can make a HUGE difference in changing policy. It only takes a second to sign!

Did you know that there are over 80,000 toxic chemicals available on the shelves that have not even been tested by the EPA for their effects on our health and the environment? Think about that. Those cleaners that you buy, the shampoo you put in your hair or your children's, the electronics, the furniture, and the fabric.........all have the possibility of being covered with chemicals that scientists haven't a clue about....and how they will effect your or your child's body, or the environment.

Since 1976, scientists have known that exposure to toxic chemicals, especially early in life, can effect any number of systems in our body in a dramatic way; possibly even causing cancer, hormonal imbalances, immune deficiencies, learning disabilities, and birth defects.  How scary is that??? Our children should not be test subjects for these chemicals, neither should we, or our environment!!! We need to take action.

There is something that we can do about this:

Let's Make Our Voices Heard!

Sign this petition to help lead the way:

We need meaningful Chemical reform!
* Faster response time from the EPA to test chemicals
*Disclosure of all chemicals and their effects on all products
*Protect the most vulnerable among us: children, pregnant women, and the workers and communities that work with and live around harmful chemicals
*Give States rights to protect their people when the Federal Government fails to do so

Our Country's main chemical safety bill, the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) was passed more than 30 years ago (has never been updated!) and falls woefully short of the goal of protecting us and the environment against toxic chemicals. This is mostly because weaknesses in the law have stopped the EPA on acting on thousands of known chemicals; within the first year the bill was passed more than 60,000 chemicals went unchecked onto the market!! Since then, the EPA has only been able to check about 200 of those chemicals. So many chemicals are in our homes and our workplaces, in the ocean, and on the land. We are saturated with chemicals. It is time for us to take a stand for our children and our world.

A Great Online Coupon Site!

This is a sponsored post for which I was given compensation in return for my honest opinion.

Did you know that the U.S. is projected to sell 248 Billion dollars of product online in 2014?
That is a lot of money!

Nowadays, a lot of people prefer to shop from the comfort of their home. Days like Cyber Monday were created just for those people; the people who want to avoid the lines, the crowds, the traffic and just get what they need in their own time and maybe even while they're in their bathrobe. Coloring their hair. Having a cup of coffee. That's my kind of shopping right there!

Shopping online is simple, but it can be made even more effective by using online coupon sites to help you get a good deal..... a deal that you might never have had if you had walked into the store! Sites like LavishCoupons help you to make smart shopping decisions and save you money! Before you go shopping at a store online, check out sites like LavishCoupons to see if they have any coupons that might apply to your order!

Twirl Girl Review and Coupon

Twirly Girl is a fantastic online company that sells the funnest girls party dresses you've ever seen. Party dresses for girls  like these  are so unique compared to what you can find in stores nowadays, and the best part is that a lot of them Twirl like nobody's business. Look at that one above! What kid wouldn't love a dress that gets the full twirl like that!

Twirly Girl is a company created a woman with a wonderful and very creative sense of fashion. From a young age she made unique fashion choices and when she had her own kids that was genetically passed down to them! How did she help them express themselves in their outfits you might ask? Months of sewing classes and lots of shopping in the LA fashion district. From there came the original reversible Twirly Girl dress that her kids adored and soon *many* kids adored. Girl party dresses are a hard thing to shop for and you can find so many different variations of style, color, and pattern at Twirly Girl.

The idea behind a reversible dress is particularly appealing to me. I love that these dress are so changeable and girl kids the option of changing up their outfit. Sizes are available from 12-18 months to size 14! The Twirl Girl website is also very fun; there are random fun math questions and something called Twirly Girl theater for listening to illustrated short stories on itunes. This business owner to understanding of what makes a company fun and different from any others and boy has she succeeded! I also love that they do school fundraising by giving each school a special coupon code and however much is bought using that code in 7 days  will have 15 percent taken off the total and given back to the school and even free shipping with US ground!

I got a chance to review the Totally Tankful dress from Twirly Girl. Girls party dress shopping is tricky stuff and I am so glad they sent us the one that they did....my niece adores it. The fabric had an awesome pattern and the material is soft and stretchy. The Tankful dress doesn't twirl, some versions of their dresses don't, but I've been told it is incredibly comfortable. The thing I like the most about these dresses is the fabric. These are styles you won't find in a regular shop. That is a very important aspect of shopping; I don't want to look like everyone else...just a sheep in the crowd. These dresses day "I'm me!" in every sense of the word.

If you like to learn more about Twirly Girl and shop their wonderful connection visit Twirly Girl here. Be sure to take extra time wander through all of the options, I was amazed at the quality of this product and the prices as well. I will definitely be trying the coupon out.
While you are there, use this awesome coupon for 15% off your order!

Put that code above in the Coupon Code box at Checkout.
This coupon does not apply to sale items, gift certificates, or design your own dress features.

A Marvelous Mess and Fotor Review

I was compensated for parts of this post. All opinions are my own an written in my own words.

Hi Folks!

I would love to introduce you to one of my favorite photo editor online.....though I have no doubt many of you know this company already!
FOTOR!

Fotor is free online photo editor that I use almost daily. I have tried quite a few different free photo editing software online and time and again I find myself going back to Fotor. From basic edits like cropping, straightening, color levels to complex edits such as the ability to write text in photo. It is amazing what kind of photo enhancements you can do! Check out some of the versions of what I did with this picture of Buddy:

This is the picture without edits:

With the "1 step" button:
Some brightening, clarity, and the snow looks much less blue. But I've done a lot of editing with this kind of software so I went further on my own:

Here is mine with these edits: contrast, brightness, saturation, shadows, temperature.

With Fotor, I could put so many different effects on this photo! Fotor has also got a collage maker, clip art and frames!

Here is an "Autumn" effect:

As you can see, big fan of Fotor here.
Give it a try, I know you'll love it!
Plus, it's free!

And now for the post I'm going to feature on my sidebar for a week:
Dessert Nachos! from Made it. Ate it. Loved it.

Some serious yummy going on!

On to the party!
